ARTIST STATEMENT

Henning Haupt

The series of paintings in this exhibition were completed in the summer of 2009, after relocating myself from Berlin to Fort Lauderdale. Because of this, the work was informed by my own transition to the subtropical climate and my discovery of its wonders of fauna and flora on land and in water. This experience was combined with the troubling idea of how this might change under the current influence of the changing climate. With this in mind, the series of these non-representational paintings became a dream-like fiction, which develops a lyrical theme when viewed together.

In general my paintings are strongly dependent on the use of the color material in combination with a process that is driven by the search for spaces or atmospheres, which only can exist within color. This series differs from others by integrating a distinct use of brush strokes in some areas, forming more intimate ‘events’ within the larger scale of the blurred color-space. These ‘events’ and the entire painting express the production process and reveals the presence of the painter.
